Toys for Tots began in 1947 thanks to the Marine Corps Reserve Major Bill Hendricks. His wife asked him to donate some handcrafted dolls to any agency that supported children in need. However, he couldn't find one, but in response she instructed him to "start one".
After this, they managed to collect and distribute 5,000 toys to children in need. Years later Walt Disney designed the first Toys for Tots poster which included the iconic red train that now its our logo.
Up to date, Toys for Tots has donated more than 677 million toys, not only during christmas but also during tragic times.
Provide hope and joy to children in need by giving them toys and books during Christmastime and throughout the year.
The basic mission of the Marine Toys for Tots Program is to collect new unwrapped toys and distribute those toys to economically disadvantaged children at Christmas.
The primary goal of Marine Toys for Tots is, through the gift of a new toy, help bring the joy of Christmas and send a message of hope to America’s economically disadvantaged children.
The Toys for Tots program is runned by the Commander of Marine Forces Reserve with support of the Marine Forces Reserve staff. The operational and funsraising functions are managed by the Marine Toys for Tots foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located near Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia.
The campaigns are conducted in over 800 communities across all over 50 states, including the district of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Each community counts with its own coordinator, and over 150 Marine Reserve Unitis participate.
The toy collection &distributioon goes from October to late December. Community members donate new, unwrapped toys, then the coordinators sort the toys by age and gender. Finally they get distributed to the disadvanted children.
The program's success relies heavily on commmunity involvement, business cooperation, and the generosity of donors. All working together to bring holiday joy to children in need.
